Bible Verses on…Astrology

When we talk about today's astrology, the daily online horoscope is basically a form of entertainment rather than something that will guide our future. However, why are we looking at a horoscope at all? God knows our futures, and he asks us to trust in Him, so what is it about us that we need to consult something so faulty as a horoscope? Here are some Bible verses on astrology to explain why consulting the stars isn't necessarily useful or in our best interest:

The Future is Only God's to Know

The primary purpose of astrology is to know what is going to happen in our lives. People look to the stars to help make decisions or know if love is coming. But the future is really only God's to know. he is the one who guides our hands and our steps. When we're concerned about what's going to happen in our lives, we need to turn to God, not the stars. We may not see a clear picture, but we need to trust in Him. He will reveal what we need to know in His time, he may use the stars to reveal where we need to go (like in the case of the three wise men seeking out the baby Jesus), but seeking astrologers and mediums is not in God's plan.

Daniel 2:27-28
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. (NKJV)

Daniel 4:7
When all the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and fortune-tellers came in, I told them the dream, but they could not tell me what it meant. (NLT)

Micah 5:12
I will put an end to all witchcraft, and there will be no more fortune-tellers. (NLT)

Matthew 2:1-2
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (NIV)

Psalm 19:1
The heavens keep telling the wonders of God, and the skies declare what he has done. (CEV)

Isaiah 8:19
When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God?Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? (NASB)

Be of God, Not of the World

For the most part, today's astrology is not necessarily anything more than entertainment. Horoscopes are generic enough that they can apply to anything, but why bother with it when we have something so much better - God Himself? God tells us to be of Him, not of the world, and astrology is something of the world.

Leviticus 19:31
Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God. (NIV)

Deuteronomy 4:19
And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The Lord your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth. (NLT)

Deuteronomy 18:9-12
When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. (NLT)

Jeremiah 10:2-3
Don’t follow the customs of those nations who become frightened when they see something strange happen in the sky. Their religion is worthless! They chop down a tree, carve the wood into an idol (CEV)

Deuteronomy 17:2-3
The Lord your God is giving you towns to live in. But later, a man or a woman in your town may start worshiping other gods, or even the sun, moon, or stars. I have warned you not to worship other gods, because whoever worships them is disobeying the Lord and breaking the agreement he made with you. (CEV)

Jeremiah 27:9
So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’ (NIV)

Galatians 5:20-21
Idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. (NLT)

2 Kings 21:6
He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger. (NIV)

Leviticus 19:26
You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying. (NKJV)

Leviticus 20:6
And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. (NKJV)

1 Chronicles 10:13-14
So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium instead of asking the Lord for guidance. So the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse. (NLT)

Future Telling Won't Save You, God Will

When we look to the future to make decisions, we are not trusting God as we should. We're telling God that He is not enough for us and that we do not have the patience to wait on His time. When we're in trouble, the stars won't save us, only God will.

Isaiah 47:13-14
You have worn yourself out, asking for advice from those who study the stars and tell the future month after month. Go ask them how to be saved from what will happen. People who trust the stars are as helpless as straw in a flaming fire. No one can even keep warm, sitting by a fire that feeds only on straw. (CEV)
