Bible Verses on Procrastination

By

Procrastination is something we all fall prone to from time to time. It's also something the Bible warns us about. When we get lazy or put off the tasks at hand, it usually doesn't stop there. Soon we're putting off prayer or reading our Bibles. Here's some Bible verses on procrastination:

Diligence is Rewarded

When you put your mind to something, you can reap the rewards.

Proverbs 12:24
Work hard, and you will be a leader; be lazy, and you will end up a slave. (CEV)

Proverbs 13:4
No matter how much you want, laziness won’t help a bit, but hard work will reward you with more than enough. (CEV)

Proverbs 20:4
If you are too lazy to plow, don’t expect a harvest. (CEV)

Ecclesiastes 11:4
Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. (NIV)

Proverbs 22:13
Don’t be so lazy that you say, “If I go to work, a lion will eat me!” (CEV)

Our Future is Uncertain

We never know what's coming around the corner. When we put things off, we compromise our future.

Proverbs 27:1
Don’t brag about tomorrow! Each day brings its own surprises. (CEV)

Proverbs 12:25
Worry is a heavy burden, but a kind word always brings cheer. (CEV)

John 9:4
We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. (NASB)

1 Thessalonians 5:2
For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. (NIV)

It Sets Poor Example

Ephesians 5:15-17
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (NKJV)

Luke 9:59-62
He said to another man, “Follow me." But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (NIV)

Romans 7:20-21
But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. (NLT)

James 4:17
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. (ESV)

Matthew 25:26
But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? (ESV)

Proverbs 3:28
Don’t tell your neighbor to come back tomorrow, if you can help today. (CEV)

Matthew 24:48-51
But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’  and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (NIV)
