Sunday Scripture: Proverbs 23:24

Sunday June 21, 2009

Proverbs 23:24 - "The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him." (NIV)

Today is Fathers' Day, which is obviously a day to honor your dad. Yet, what does that mean? In Proverbs we see that honoring our fathers is not just about going out and getting him a nice tie or new golf balls. Honoring him goes well beyond one day a year.

To honor your father means being good and wise in your own choices. Proverbs 23:24 tells us that good and wise children are a great joy to a parent. It means, basically, that he did something right and that you are a light to his world.

So, how can we show Dad that we are good? It comes from affirmations every day that dad did something right. Take a moment to listen to what your father has to say. Be respectful in the way you speak to him. Spend some quality time with Dad, not just once a year.

For the most part, we only have one Dad. We shouldn't take him for granted. So, while you hand him his new tie this Sunday, also remember that Fathers' Day is not just one day a year, but every day.

I appreciate this article, Kelli. The scripture is so powerful because it reminds me to keep my priorities in order.

I spent Fathers day with my 4 children both at church and playing at the park. I also took time out to talk to my dad.

I read these startling stats from the Men Against Domestic Violence survey:

75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes.

85% of all youths sitting in prisons grew up in fatherless homes.

Fathers - let’s keep living for God!!
