Sunday Scripture: 1 John 1: 3-5

Sunday June 7, 2009

1 John 1: 3-5 - "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." (NIV)

Let's look today at what God is. He is everything. That's what John is saying here. God is the one that made us. God provides for us. This short passage explains God's omnipotence and power over the universe. Without God we would not exist and at the same time, God also provides us power in the face of difficult things. He is always with us, even when we cannot see him. In these short sentences we can find strength and comfort in even the most difficult times.

One of the key words in this passage is "light." All living things need light to survive. If the darkness has not understood that light, then it has not found a true way to destroy us, nor can it destroy God. This passage demonstrates that we need God to survive and thrive, and God can help us overcome anything.
