Every November Americans come together to vote for those that will represent them locally and nationally. Some people think that it is the obligation of every free person to step up and cast a vote. Others believe that it is an inalienable right to not vote. Still, many Christian teens may feel excited when they reach that age in which they can fill out a ballot and let their voices be heard. In order to vote, though, you do need to be registered. So, how do you register to vote?
Am I Eligible to Vote?
Are you a U.S. citizen? Are you at least 18 years old? Are you mentally competent? Are you free from prison and not on parole? Well, if you answered yes to those questions, then it is likely that you are eligible to vote.
Where Can I Register to Vote?
Often there are elections officials that come out to local high schools each year to help students register to vote. However, if you are a Christian teen that doesn't have that option, you can also contact your Secretary of State's office or easily use the Rock the Vote registration web page. Many election offices have the option of registering online.
When Should I Register to Vote?
Every state has a different deadline for voter registration. You will need to check with your Secretary of State's office for specific deadlines. If you do not register on time you will have to wait until the next election to cast a vote.
What Materials Do You Need?
You will need your identification numbers in order to vote. It is likely that you have a Driver's License or State I.D. and a social security number. You will also need to know where you were born.
Do I Have to Choose a Political Party?
That depends. If you want to vote in a primary election, then you will need to choose a political party. However, if you do not want to choose a particular party and don't really care about voting in the primaries, then you can opt to not make that choice.
