Christine Evans is a young songwriter whose lyrics tell you she is mature beyond her years. While her album does have some catchy lyrics, it is their depth that captures your heart. She does not focus on offering up pop songs that you listen to once and toss in with the rest. Her songwriting is mature as if she is focusing on her long-term career versus being a flash-in-the-pan artist.
Christine's lyrics go deep into some of the emotional issues we all face...loneliness, love, perseverance, and faith. She challenges what people traditionally think of teens (shallow, self-involved) to show that there is a depth to young people today. In "A Nation Redeemed" she worries about the destructive attitude we have in modern society and the repercussions of the modern attitude. In "Give It Up" she takes on the Christian perspective of not holding onto temporary things too tightly, for we are not long in this world. Also, "Now I Sing" is a deep spiritual affirmation and gratitude.
Are there weaknesses to the album? Yes. The mix of music is not as even as it could be with better production. The album goes from fast to slow in jarring transitions. Also, Christine seems to be pushing her vocal skills to their limits, making her voice appear flat or strained at times. However, with a better production team these faults could be avoided in future albums. They are far from fatal flaws. Instead they could be easy fixes by placing Christine in more capable hands.
Overall, Push is a good sophomore effort from such a young artist. With such potential in her songwriting, it seems that Christine is definitely a Christian artist worth getting to know.
