Internships for High School Students

They're Not Just a College Thing

By , About.com Guide

While some think that internships are just for college students, there are a lot of opportunities for high school students to gain internship experience before college. Doing an internship while in high school can provide teens with the opportunity to learn more about what they want to do before college. Yet, by doing internships while in high school you can gain valuable work experience and figure out if the career path you choose is something you really want to do.

So, if you do want to do a high school internship, where do you look? Check out a few of these places, and then get your resume and cover letter ready:

Church Internships

Many churches will allow you to do an internship over a summer or even a part-time internship during the school year. Many Christian teens look to follow a career path in the ministry, and doing an internship at their churches gives them practical experience. Discuss your options with a pastor.

Government Internships

Many government agencies, especially Congressional offices, have high school internship programs. They often do not discriminate between high school and college students. Ask your local agencies what programs they have available for high school internships.

Major Companies

Microsoft offers internships for high school students, as do many other major corporations. Finding these internships may be a little more challenging as you seek out places of internships, but you can find out if your favorite company offers internships by visiting their websites or calling their human resources departments.

Non-Profit Organizations

Many non-profit organizations love interns, because they operate on very small budgets. Check with your favorite museums, hospitals, homeless shelters, etc. to see if they offer high school internships. Many of them already have internship programs in place, but some will even create a high school internship program if there is enough interest.
