Spiritual Gift of Tongues in Scripture:
1 Corinthians 12:10 - "He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said." NLT
1 Corinthians 12:28-30 - "Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages. Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! " NLT
Mark 16:17 - "These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages" NLT
Acts 2:4 - "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." NLT
Acts 10:46 - "For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God." NIV
Acts 11:15 - "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning." NIV
1 Corinthians 14:22 - "So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers." NLT
1 Corinthians 12:31, 13:1 - "So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal." NLT
What is the Spiritual Gift of Tongues?
The spiritual gift of speaking in tongues is one of the more controversial gifts today. There are some that consider it an obsolete gifts, like the gift of prophecy, and others that consider it an essential gift. There are those that thing the gift of tongues should be used publicly, and others believe it is just part of our individual prayer life - the way we communicate with God. Still, others think the gift of tongues is just learning other languages to be able to preach the Gospel around the world.
Any way you look at it, the spiritual gift of tongues is speaking in a foreign language, whether it is one used on the earth today or another language. It can be interpreted by others with that gift, or it can be part of a private conversation with God. Outsiders often see the gift of tongues as just gibberish spoken in church.
However you look at the spiritual gift of tongues, it is a gift not to be misused. For instance, someone coming up for prayer the first time may not understand it, and it can be disconcerting to them.
