Spiritual Gifts: Evangelism

By

Spiritual Gift of Evangelism in Scripture:

Ephesians 4:11-13 - "Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ." NLT

Luke 19:10- "For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost." NLT

Matthew 11:19 - "The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results." NLT

Acts 21:8- "Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven." NLT

2 Timothy 4:5- "But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry." NIV

Matthew 28:16-20 "Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'" NIV

Acts 8:5-6- "Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said." NIV

Acts 14:21- "After preaching the Good News in Derbe and making many disciples, Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisidia," NLT

Acts 8:34-40- "The eunuch asked Philip, 'Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?' So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus. As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?' He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther north at the town of Azotus. He preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea." NLT

What is the Spiritual Gift of Evangelism?

People with the spiritual gift of evangelism have a knack for talking to people about their Christian faith and bringing people to Christ. Those with this gift tend to hang out outside the church talking to non-Christians. They are strong in their own faith, and feel compassion and a desire to see others have what they have in Jesus.

The most well-known evangelist was Jesus. If we look closely at his story, he didn't walk into the temple and decide to hang out with the worshippers there. Instead he chose to associate with tax collectors and sinners, which was very frowned upon by religious leaders at the time. Jesus taught his disciples that it was important to bring people to Christ.

Everyone is called to witness or evangelize, but people with this gift relish the opportunity, and they often have an ability to change their evangelism style to fit the needs of the non-Christian. When people with the spiritual gift of evangelism speak the gospel, others tend to listen and are moved. People with this gift also tend to be very outgoing and have a knack for meeting new people wherever they go.

However, there is a danger in the spiritual gift of evangelism. Sometimes pride can seep in, and people can get more focused on how many people they have brought to Christ to justify how "Christian" they really are. It is due to people like these that many non-Christians see all believers as being pushy and judgmental. People with this gift must always be sensitive to how they are being perceived by those to whom they are witnessing.

Is the Gift of Evangelism My Spiritual Gift?

Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer "yes" to many of them, then you may have the spiritual gift of evangelism:

  • Do you find yourself able to talk about Christ with a strong sense of conviction?
  • Does the idea of talking about Christ and your faith feel natural to you?
  • Are you able to modify how you talk to people about faith so you approach them individually?
  • Does the idea of forming relationships with non-Chrisitans excite you?
  • Do you like teaching others about faith?
  • Do you find that you naturally turn most conversations to faith and God?
