Common Christian Questions: How Do I Know God is There When I Can't See Him?

How do we know that God is there when we can't see or feel Him? That is a common questions we all get throughout our lives, and sometimes it's a question we have to ask ourselves periodically. It's not always easy to answer, because how we experience God varies from person to person. Still, there are some ways that we can reassure ourselves and others that God is there all the time.

We All Doubt from Time to Time

It is not that uncommon to struggle with the whole "God is invisible" thing. Sometimes we have doubts that pop into our heads. Sometimes we don't know the answer to a question or statement from someone who disagrees with our faith. Those moments can be tough on us, because we feel less "Christian" somehow. We need to harness those questions, those doubts, and those moments when we feel less worthy and remind ourselves that just because God isn't always visible to us, He is always there.

Look to the Bible

Understanding that God is there when we can't see him sometimes takes some reminding. A great place to turn when we're feeling abandoned or doubting God's existence is the Bible itself. God's word reminds us that we don't always get to choose how or when we feel God, but really He never abandons us. Here are some verses to remind us that God is there even though we might not see or feel Him:

Romans 12:3 - "Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us." (NLT)

Psalm 119:89-90 - "Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations" (NIV)

Hebrews 13:5 - Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'” (NIV)

Joshua 1:5 - "No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you." (NLT)

Joshua 1:9 - "This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (NLT)

Look to Your Own Relationship with God

How has God spoken to you in the past? What do you to to foster that relationship? When was the last time you talked to God? Ask yourself these questions when you have doubts. If God has spoken to you or shown you a patch in life, try to remind yourself of those times. Sometimes we don't feel or see God, because we've been slacking a bit on our end of the relationship with Him. It doesn't mean God's not there, but that we're not looking for Him. Try taking some time to pray and talk to God. Remind yourself that He is there to listen whether you can feel Him there or not.

Ways to Remind Yourself God is There

Beyond the Bible and prayer, there are hundreds of other signs that God is right there with us. Taking a walk and looking at how nature intertwines itself. Only God could design something so amazing. Hug your family or chat with your friends. He places important people in your life to sometimes remind you that He is always at work. If we look around, we see miracles everywhere. Not all miracles are huge. Sometimes it's little, everyday miracles that remind us how He is right there beside each and every one of us.
