Know the Suicide Warning Signs

6 Signs that Someone May Be Suicidal

By , About.com Guide

In almost 75 percent of suicides, there were suicide warning signs that, had they been noticed, may have prevented the person from taking his or her life. That is not to say that every suicidal person exhibits the warning signs, but if we know what to look for, we can contact a suicide hotline number or help our loved one get some help.

Death Talk

A lot of suicidal teens (and adults for that matter) talk quite a bit about death. They tend to mention hurting themselves or disappearing completely. Sometimes the suicidal individual will discuss plans for dying. They may make plans for how to care for friends and family when they are gone.

Change in Personality and Behavior

A common suicide warning sign is the change in personality and behavior. Often suicidal individuals have problems concentrating on what we may thing are the simple things. They become sad and withdrawn, anxious, tired, or just don't seem to care about things. They are indecisive and often irritable. The person may even develop drug habits. Agitation and hyperactivity are also warning signs, as is acting recklessly.

Change in Sleeping Habits

A change in sleeping habits is another suicide warning sign. Oversleeping or waking up early with bouts of insomnia are common, as are nightmares.

Change in Eating Habits

Suicidal people either tend to lose their appetite and start losing weight or they will begin overeating.

Recent Loss

A recent loss can trigger suicidal tendencies. Anyone who has had someone close to them die, had a terrible breakup, recently had parents divorce, walked away from God, etc. may be at a greater risk of suicide.

A Sense of Hopelessness

Often a suicidal individual will feel like there is no hope for the future. When faced with difficult times, a common suicide warning sign is the person making statements like "things will never change." The person feels worthless with a strong self-loathing.
