Rally for a Wholesome Pop Culture

Sunday March 2, 2008

Recently hundreds of Christian teens rallied in front of MTV's "Total Request Live" to protest the explicit nature of pop culture today. The teens were part of the Texas-based group, "Recreate," whose mission it is to change the messages given off by current music, film, fashion, and more. The group protested how these mediums make things like drugs, sex, and pornography such a normal part of what teens see every day that teens are becoming desensitized. Members of the group feel that this exposure takes the innocence out of growing up, and to a point it may be.

I just wonder what God thinks of what we watch and listen to. The Bible talks about Godly behavior and such. Yet, we also need to be aware of what is going on in the world in order to reach out to it. I believe in freedom of speech. I also believe in free will, but I don't think my life was less informed or less full by not seeing people doing drugs and using profanity in movies. What do you think? I am of the opinion that the greatest problem for our generation is Internet pornography. It is seen as undamaging for a boy to look at pornography on the Internet by people of our age. The ready availability of this material assures that all of my friends are regular consumers of pornography. We will end up with a generation of closet pornography addicts that will find difficulty in relating sexually to one another and who will be unable to discern lustful feelings with true love.

I agree with you. we need to stand up for God and defend those who are lost, by changing what we can as it is our duty as Christians.

I think its awesome. A new gospel is being preached now adays and people are too afraid of standing up for the will of God. We as Christians are sent to speak the truth and unfortunately alot of teens are mis-informed of whats right. People just dont want to offend others and its about time we take a stand for righteousness regardless of the circumstance. We need to be a God- fearing people and not be consumed with what people think.

I completely agree and back these kids up. Kids my age are always seeing videos and shows and web sites chock full of sex, drugs, alcohol, and other things. Personally, I’m sick of it. These kids in Texas have the right idea. My life is perfectly fine without hearing the f-word every five seconds at school. So I think people need to think about what they’re saying and what they’re watching. All this junk is weighing down their soul and getting in the way of talking with God. I know, a lot of my friends suffer with this. Even I struggle with things like this.

I think this is just silly. I wonder if anyone has considered that the words “Pop Culture” and “Wholesome” - in this specific case - are complete oxymorons! I also believe that there is nothing “innocent” about growing up. I believe that young people should just pull away from Pop Culture in general and just be *themselves*! There is innocence in being little, but there is pain, danger, and darkness in growing up; this is what I believe.

i actually participated in one of the battlecry or what u call “recreate” rallies in times square this year…and it was awesome to see so many kids coming together and standing up for what they believe in!!
forlornshadow–you are right, in todays world “wholesome pop-culture” IS an oxymoron, but that is what we are taking a stand against. i don’t want my peers to have to endure the “pain, danger, and darkness” of growing up…there are thousands of kids who are making right decisions and growing up to be very successful and amazzing adults. pornography, secular music and entertainment does NOTHING for this generation but destroy us…if we don’t take a stand now, who knows what will happen in this country 20 years from now

Well, it’s silly in my eyes. Believe what you want, but I think it’s flat-out silly.

I think we should all ignore the media and get on with life. Maybe if we ignore it, maybe all of this junk will stop. Maybe the media will disappear. (I wonder what that would be like.) O.O
